It is three years since Diana, Princess of Wales was killed in a tragic car crash in that Paris tunnel. I just returned from a month long trip to England and there is still no permanent memorial to her memory. Yes, there is Althorp where one can visit during the months of July and August. And there is now a playground for the children in London. And, of course, the memorial that Mr. Al Fayed has placed in Harrod's to Dodi and Diana. But what of the country to whom she gave so much? There needs to be a permanent memorial where one can go to just sit, whether young or old, and think about all that she accomplished and all that she gave in her short life. When I think of Diana, I think of her holding tiny babies in her arms who were suffering from one of many diseases. I think of her holding the hand of a man with AIDS, showing the world that one did not get AIDS through touching. I think of her walking amongst the landmines to show people the destruction these things caused. And I think of her with her own children, who were such a delight to her. How much they must miss her. Having lost my Mom four years ago at the age of 77, I can take comfort in knowing that my Mom was there for all the important moments of my life while I was growing up. Diana's boys had that taken away. There is nothing that can replace a mother's love. I also think of the love that Diana had for life. Her beauty and her style will always be remembered. But most of all, I hope she is always remembered for what she gave to others, for it was in that giving that her name will live on.
